OPTRONICS SYSTEMS ENGINEER

Sandwich, Kent

Would you rather inherit a finished function… or build one properly?

Some engineering roles keep you in a lane.

A bit of simulation here. A bit of test there. A bit of paperwork everywhere.

This isn’t one of those roles.

This is for an Optronics Systems Engineer who wants to get stuck into real systems work. The kind of person who enjoys joining the dots between optics, electronics, mechanics, software and control. Someone who likes turning ideas into working capability, not just talking about it in meetings or modelling it from a distance.

Because here, the opportunity is bigger than just supporting what already exists.

That means taking technical ownership of multidisciplinary projects involving electro-optical, optical and laser-based systems. It means leading integration activity, shaping requirements, managing interfaces, reducing technical risk and helping bring complex products through the full lifecycle from concept to validation.

It also means being hands-on.

Not purely academic or research-led. Not somebody who wants to live in theory, test reports or simulation tools all day. This role needs an engineer who understands systems design and integration in the real world, who can lead technically, make good decisions and help move capability forward.

The products sit in the world of electro-optical sensors, surveillance systems, target acquisition and precision engineering. So, if your background includes thermal imaging, electro-optical integration, targeting systems, defence sensors, surveillance technology or even adjacent sectors like medical imaging, there’s every chance your experience could transfer well.

You’ll be joining a specialist engineering and manufacturing business in Kent with a strong technical culture and a genuinely collaborative feel. It’s a smaller, engineering-driven environment, so you won’t disappear into layers of process or politics. People know each other. People help each other. And if you like the idea of growing with a business, taking ownership and having the space to make your mark, you’ll probably feel at home here.

You’ll need to be a UK citizen for this one. That part is strict.

You’ll also need to be eligible for SC level security clearance, have a full current driving licence, and be comfortable being on site in Sandwich for the majority of the week. Hybrid working is possible, but this is a role where being close to the engineering really matters.

What they’ll be looking for:

• Strong knowledge across optical, electro-optical, laser, mechanical, electronic, control and software-integrated systems
• Experience in requirements capture and management
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary systems design and integration
• A practical, hands-on approach
• Someone who wants to build capability, not just maintain it
• Someone motivated by good engineering, ownership and long-term impact more than chasing the next pay bump
You’ll also be involved in stakeholder engagement, customer interaction, bid support, verification and validation planning, and making sure designs reflect the realities of manufacture, reliability, maintainability and safety.

And then there’s the lifestyle side of it too.

A 9-day fortnight means every other Friday off.
There’s a friendly and supportive culture.
And relocation assistance is available if a move to Kent makes sense.

So if you’re an Optronics Systems Engineer who wants to do more than just occupy a niche…
If you want to help create capability, lead technically and build things that matter…

Apply now.

And if your CV isn’t perfectly up to date, send what you have. A good conversation is usually where these things start.
